Using the Lynda.com tutorials through the Trinity University campus account.
Log in to your account at lynda.trinity.edu
See the Assignment Guidelines. You may download the tutorial exercise files on your own or copy them from the Class folder inside LYNDA.
Work through the exercises, either Chapter 8 for Windows or chapters 13&14 for Macs.
In a new blog entry called Using Lynda.com, upload a screen shot of your tutorial project in progress, it doesn't particularly matter where (pause the video and take an interesting screen capture). Under the screen shot write an entry critiquing the experience. Was it easy to use? How did you like the presenter's voice, timing and delivery? What were the problems you encountered, if any? Discuss and compare learning from a self-paced tutorial with learning in class as a group.
At the end of your entry, name one or two new things that you learned about MS Word from using the Lynda.com tutorial.
PART TWO-hands-on formatting and copywriting:
Sundance Film Festival screens nominated short independent film features that are available on You Tube. One that was shown recently is called Dig. Your assignment is to watch the 9-minute film and write a short (one page total) review. Love it or hate it, your choice, but convince us of your position by explaining the meaning of the film if there is one, and why or why not it is significant. You can find background info about Dig here, and there is a layout example of the elements you should include inside your homework folder.
Include the following Word features:
Two column format (excluding title and references)
Text box "Pull Quote"
Font changes, your choice
Insert the Sundance logo somewhere in your review and also one downloaded photo of an appropriate photo or graphic from the Internet. Here are some prompts to get you started (you do not need to use any of these if you don't want to):
- Are the popsicles important?
- What role do the other children play?
- What role do the neighbors play?
- Is Johnny's wife a sympathetic character?
- Describe the acting style of the man who plays Johnny.
At the end of the report, insert an endnote and list the source(s) that you used to get your information.
Demonstrate your knowledge of good design, creative prose, and correct grammar and spelling.
