To learn about the history of Spain during the 16th century; to learn about the artist El Greco; and to experiment with painting in the artistic style called Mannerism.

Instructions
After giving a lesson about El Greco's style of Mannerism, take a picture of each student on a digital camera, in a dramatic pose, similar to those common in art of Spain during the 16th century. Transfer the images to a computer and remove the background of the image, leaving only the student. Elongate the picture and print the image to the actual size that the painting will be. Place carbon paper beneath the computer printout and have the students trace themselves onto pieces of Bristol board, paying special attention to the details in their facial expression. Using acrylic paint or gouache, have the students paint their picture, being sure to use dramatic and unnatural colors (reds, teals, greens, yellows, blues).
